The Ngwee Ngwee Ngwee Fund, meaning “bright” in Chichewa, is an initiative by the Government of Malawi, supported by the World Bank, to enhance electricity access in rural areas. Launched under the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP), the fund aims to increase electricity access from 18% to 30% of the population by providing financial support to off-grid solar companies. This support includes a $6 million Results-Based Financing (RBF) grant and a $14 million debt facility, targeting the provision of solar home systems to at least 200,000 new households by June 2024.
The fund’s objectives include providing working capital loans to expand operations, offering end-user subsidies to make solar home systems more affordable, and supporting market innovation initiatives to reach underserved populations. By addressing financing challenges and affordability gaps, the Ngwee Ngwee Ngwee Fund seeks to accelerate the adoption of off-grid solar solutions, thereby improving energy access and contributing to socio-economic development in Malawi.
